What Does an Online Coach Actually Do?

“Online coaching” is everywhere now, but if you’ve never had one it can be hard to picture what you’re actually paying for. Isn’t it just a PDF workout emailed to you? Do you ever hear from them? Is it as good as an in-person trainer?

Fair questions, and I get them a lot. Online coaching is the core of what I do, so let me give you an honest, behind-the-scenes look at what a good online coach actually does, and why it’s often more personal and more effective than a standard gym session.

Online coaching is a partnership, not a PDF

The biggest misconception is that online coaching is just a generic program dropped in your inbox. Good online coaching is the opposite. It’s an ongoing, personal relationship where your coach builds your plan, teaches you how to do it, keeps you accountable, and adjusts everything as you progress. You’re not buying a document, you’re buying expertise, structure and support.

Here’s what that looks like in practice.

1. A training program built for you

Your coach designs a strength program specific to your goals, experience, equipment, schedule and any injuries or niggles. Training out of a garage gym with a few dumbbells? Full commercial gym? Three days a week or five? Your program is built around your life, not a one-size-fits-all template.

As you get stronger, your coach progresses the plan, adding weight, reps or new exercises, so you keep making gains instead of plateauing.

2. Technique coaching through video

This is the part that surprises people. With most online coaching, you film yourself doing your key lifts and send the videos to your coach, who reviews your form and sends back specific feedback and cues. Because they can rewatch your video as many times as they need, this feedback is often more detailed than a trainer glancing at you between other clients on a busy gym floor.

3. Nutrition guidance

Most quality online coaching includes nutrition support, whether that’s protein and calorie targets, flexible-eating guidance, meal ideas, or help navigating real life like eating out and social events. Your coach helps you build habits that fit your life, rather than handing you a rigid meal plan you’ll abandon in a fortnight.

4. Accountability and check-ins

This is arguably the biggest value of coaching. Regular check-ins, usually weekly, keep you consistent. You’ll typically send progress photos, measurements, training data and notes on how your week went. Your coach reviews it all, celebrates the wins, troubleshoots the sticking points, and adjusts your plan.

Knowing someone is reviewing your week is a powerful motivator. It’s a lot easier to skip a session when nobody’s watching, and a lot easier to show up when someone is.

5. Ongoing support and answers

Good coaches are reachable between check-ins through an app or messaging. Not sure how to swap an exercise? Struggling with cravings? Travelling and need to adapt? You’ve got an expert in your pocket to ask, instead of guessing or falling down a Google rabbit hole.

6. Education, so you become independent

A great coach doesn’t just tell you what to do, they teach you why, so you understand training and nutrition well enough to eventually run your own show. The goal isn’t dependence, it’s giving you skills and confidence that last a lifetime.

What a typical week looks like

  • You train using your program, logging your sessions in an app
  • You film a lift or two for form feedback
  • You hit your nutrition targets and track as agreed
  • At the end of the week you send your check-in (photos, measurements, notes)
  • Your coach reviews everything and sends feedback plus next week’s adjustments
  • You message your coach through the week with any questions

Frequently asked questions

Is online coaching as good as in-person training? For a lot of women it’s better. You get a fully customised program, detailed video form feedback, nutrition guidance and ongoing accountability, often at a lower cost than repeated in-person sessions.

Do I need a gym for online coaching? No. Your coach builds your program around whatever you have, whether that’s a full gym, a home setup, or minimal equipment.

How often do I speak to my coach? Typically a formal check-in each week, plus messaging access in between for questions and support.

Will an online coach help with my form? Yes. You send videos of your lifts and your coach reviews them and sends specific corrections, often in more detail than an in-person session allows.

An online coach is part programmer, part nutrition guide, part accountability partner and part educator, all built around your goals and your life.
